Olteanu

Curatorial Curriculum Vitae & Bio-Bibliography (1966 – 2026)

UAP Romania Member Since 1981 Order "Victory of the Romanian Revolution" Founder Cupola Gallery 1992 CODEX Art Registry
"I do not paint mere objects or landscapes. I paint that suspended stillness between two thoughts, the realm where matter transforms into emotion."

A towering figure of contemporary Romanian painting, Master Mihai Teodor Olteanu synthesizes the rigorous craftsmanship of classical masters with a sacramental understanding of pictorial matter. Over six decades of studio practice, hundreds of exhibitions spanning from Timișoara and Bucharest to the European Parliament in Brussels and across North America, his oeuvre stands as an archetype of spiritual resilience and metaphysical depth.

Every canvas is a chromatic altar conceived in sculptural layers of dense oil paint, applied with the palette knife and enriched with noble accents of pure 24k gold leaf. The luminescence within his compositions is not a mere optical chiaroscuro, but the uncreated light of interior transfiguration.

Chapter I

Biographic Profile & Formative Roots

Origins & Birth

1953 • Deva, Hunedoara

Transylvanian roots deeply anchored in the archaic gravity of historical landscapes and early Christian spirituality. Later permanently established in Timișoara, the city to which he dedicated his entire pictorial life.

Early Debut

1966 • First Solo Appearance

Early solo exhibitions documented in official national art archives (Brezianu Archive). Early mastery of pure oil paint and deliberate departure from socialist realism.

Guild Affiliation

1981 • Full Member UAP

Full integration into the Romanian Fine Artists' Union (UAP Timișoara Branch) following landmark solo exhibitions at Helios and Bastion Galleries, establishing him as a leader of the regional guild.

Mihai Teodor Olteanu has spent decades establishing an unmistakable pictorial syntax centered on chromatic bas-relief (sculptural impasto). Applying generous layers of oil paint with palette knives and infusing compositions with delicate gold leaf, the master does not merely paint an image—he constructs a physical, tactile sanctuary imbued with spiritual resonance.

In December 1989, he stood on the front lines of the Romanian Revolution in Timișoara, earning renown as the "Painter of the Revolution." The crucible of that historic transformation indelibly marked his monumental works, where crosses of uncreated light, archangels, and celestial citadels bear witness to the triumph of the human spirit over totalitarian oppression.

In 1992, he founded Galeria Cupola—the very first private art gallery in post-communist Timișoara—inaugurated with an opening address by prominent art historian Deliu Petroiu. In 2000, he broadened his cultural mission as Artistic Director and founding curator of Galeria Orhideea in central Timișoara.

Chapter VII

Critical Exegesis & Authoritative Voices

“

"Mihai Teodor Olteanu possesses the rare gift of grounding the spirit into tangible matter. He does not paint superficial decorative surfaces; he builds light into a dense sculptural bas-relief that turns the canvas into a sanctuary of stillness."

Deliu Petroiu Art Historian & Critic • Keynote Cupola Gallery Inauguration 1992
“

"One has the visceral sense of standing before a painter who prays through his brushwork, for whom painting is physical prayer and transcendence over time. His impasto echoes van Gogh, yet his luminescence originates in the theology of the Eastern icon."

Doina Uricariu Author & Art Critic (New York) • Critical Essay "The Ladder of Paradise"
“

"He perceives the world from an eternity beyond time; he absorbs the universe through every pore, concentrates it in his gaze, and delivers the stroke—setting the Point. Olteanu is the frenetic reporter of both the instant and eternity."

Vasile Bogdan Author & Cultural Filmmaker • Monograph "The Instant and Eternity"
“

"Master Olteanu's art transcends simple optical representation. Across his canvases pulses the sacred geometry of the cosmos and the inner fervor of a creator who never compromises with transience."
