Moment and Eternity: Vasile Bogdan

He knows the world from an eternity beyond time; he knows what was, what is, and what will be. He absorbs the universe’s messages through every pore, distills them, concentrates them into the clarity of his gaze, and makes the gesture—he places the Dot.

Vasile Bogdan

The painter Mihai Teodor Olteanu is the frantic reporter of the fleeting moment. His imagination instantly freezes, and that moment becomes magical. A vortex of color, a visage transfixed into eternity.

What was once becoming, a flow of imagination and narrative, becomes synthesis—the embodiment of a world with all its meanings unfurled in lines and colors of exceptional expressiveness.

I have watched him at work on more than one occasion. First, his gaze—concentrated, transported to a time without memory, where passions churn, immense waves roll, and crash against immemorial shores. Then, his eyes clear, a serene peace embraces that personal infinity, and a smile erases the previous tension.

And then, the brush places the Dot.

Across the infinity of the canvas, it appears carelessly cast, like the frayed end of a thread. In truth, it is the locus from which he, the demiurge, initiates the creation of the world. I speak blasphemy, I know—he himself would frown upon such unjust comparisons—yet that is how it feels to me in those moments: the dawn of a world, a fragment of life’s truth, a moment dedicated to remembrance.

For what else is a painting, in his vision, than a moment worthy of being preserved in memory? An intense experience, a feeling, a need to liberate oneself from a memory? An exhibition thus becomes a universe of knowledge, an accumulation of experiences, a confession, a revealed transgression—a sum of such transgressions, redeemed through beauty. And a defiance, a cry, the necessity of a confession that must merely be understood, not judged.

This is who I am! Ecce homo!
Him and nothing more.

The Dot. The Origin.

From there issue the lines, the orgiastic display of color, the explosion. It resembles a new star born from the darkness. Curiously, although each painting is an entire world in itself, it can only be fully grasped in conjunction with many others like it, in order to encompass the Olteanu Universe.

Whether it is a copse, a sunset at the edge of a lake, a wave shattering against a rock, a street, a church, a clouded sky—all of these, placed side by side, constitute Life. The logic of Life. The duct of movement, meaning and experience, birth and death.

Amidst these turbulent images, the Painter does not lose his point of departure. It remains there, like a seed, like a balancing factor. Upon it rests his universe. Much like Archimedes’ fulcrum, it holds the entire world in equilibrium.

Decoding one of his paintings thus becomes a charade, the adventure of finding this point, hidden either within a flowerpot, a petal, the cross atop a cathedral spire, the foam of a wave, or the yellowed leaf of a tree. It lies precisely in the place from which you feel the heat emanate; you find it by feeling, by feeling yourself.

Right where you yourself experience the sensation of rediscovery, of rebirth, of inner joy.

His paintings charm you, yet they also challenge you. You question the purpose of it all—the purpose of this wondrous nature sublimated into signs, the purpose of walking down that street you have traversed so many times, yet whose identity you are only now discovering. You realize that your entire passage through the world has been a drab journey through countless meaningless moments, during which you missed your encounter with eternity.

If only some of those moments had pierced the sky and descended into you, bringing the light and peace of the heavens… perhaps then…

And all of this is evoked by the paintings of Mihai Teodor Olteanu – eternity close at hand, the imperative to look upon your surroundings anew, to revel in every stone, every leaf, every wave, and every breath of wind.

His canvases quietly yet unequivocally assert that you are unique.

Each of us is singular, irreproducible. Although we are human beings, sharing fundamental attributes, every individual possesses distinct sentiments and inner experiences. We each perceive the world in our own way, act differently, and endure through time by virtue of our own inner strength.

A meditation upon time and its unfolding purpose, upon mankind and its inherent boundaries, upon our tragic mortal condition – all of these converge within The Point, placed with profound deliberation upon the canvas of Mihai Teodor Olteanu.

He comprehends the world from an eternity that transcends time itself.

He knows what has been, what is, and what is yet to come.

He feels the messages of the universe through every fiber of his being.

He distills them to their essence.

He concentrates them within the clarity of his vision. And then, he makes the gesture – he places The Point.
